Miss Haberdash the art of embroidery ....

I'm a big fan of Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4. Dedicated to celebrating, informing and entertaining women. In the UK this show is an institution, Jenni Murray presides and covers the issues of the day.
In July, artists Sarah Greaves and Penny Anderson were guests, talking about the art of embroidery as graffiti (click on the link to hear the interview, scroll to 34 mins).

The idea of the subversive stitch is nothing new, textiles have long been associated with protest. Look at homegrown RadicalCrossStitch and Anna Brownfield's film Making it Handmade recently screened on ABC.  Further proof that craft is alive and kicking!

Miss Haberdash paper dolls....

This Sunday the very best of Northcote was on show for High Noon Melbourne's coolest street festival for live music, art and fashion.

At the Thornbury Neighbourhood House stall, Dee of Baby Galah was in crowd control, her idea of  colour in paper dolls was a huge hit with kids and adults alike.

Which brings me to Paperdoll Review found whilst idling online, with fantastic titles like Dangerous dolls, Movie Mobsters and even Voodoo Dolls you'll be amazed- it's a little bit bonkers.

Miss Haberdash has a crush....

on Irish textile designer Orla Kiely. Browsing her latest book Pattern I was transported to my 70s childhood, tangerine wallpaper and tupperware! Her signature stem design appears on everything from wallpaper to handbags and if you're travelling overseas you can buy it in Target!

Miss Haberdash wrap up ....

Times are a changing, after seven years working in South Melbourne Miss Haberdash is moving on. Before I go, here are my favourite lunchtime haunts.

Opposite South Melbourne Market, gigi a la maison sells antique French and vintage enamelware, gorgeous, but beware of the price tags.

The Community Chest op shop on Bank Street still has a clutter that excites, real bargains and friendly staff.

But, South Melbourne's hidden gem is the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Producing contemporary hand woven tapestries the studio creates unique works of art. The workshop hosts regular guided tours.

Miss Haberdash fashion fix ....

To coincide with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week  ACMI are showing Men of Fashion. The four documentary films feature, Ozwald Boateng, Paul Smith, Vidal Sassoon and in Dressed up for Winter the best designers at Paris 2011/12. Back in the day Paul Smith made a lasting impression. It was the 80s and his bright floral shirts were the "in thing".  Now his signature stripes rule and can be seen on everything.

He's also a collector of vintage ephemera which translates to this range of handbags from an earlier collection.

And I just added this for fun, the Paul Smith Ping Pong table? by Hunn Wai.
